La serie è composta dalle cartelle cliniche contenenti per ciascun ricoverato: registro nosografico, tabelle termometriche, fotografie, radiografie, tracciati di elettroencefalogrammi, lettere con richiesta di ricovero presso l'Istituto (indirizzate o al direttore o alla regina Elena), "basi di accettazione" per il ricovero, questionario compilato dal medico curante ai fini del ricovero.
Si fa presente che non in tutte le cartelle cliniche si riscontra la presenza di tutte le suddette tipologie documentarie. Alcune cartelle si riferiscono anche a più ricoveri.
Le cartelle sono disposte in ordine di posizione (fascc. 1-1594). E' stata conservata la numerazione originaria poiché solo attraverso la rubrica, che riporta numero di matricola, nomi e cognomi dei singoli degenti, è possibile rinvenire le singole cartelle (cfr. registro 188).
Le cartelle cliniche dei ricoverati costituiscono la documentazione sanitaria pù consistente.
